Cannabis and Pets: Understanding the Risks of THC

The joint is no longer a fringe topic – not even in the living room. While many people are more open about cannabis today, an important question often remains unanswered: What does consumption actually mean for pets?

Poisoning most commonly occurs when dogs get hold of products left lying around. But passive smoke is not automatically harmless either. Besides THC, smoke contains numerous particles and combustion products that neither humans nor animals should regularly inhale.
Cannabis and pets is therefore not a theoretical discussion, but a real everyday question. This article explains:

Veterinary evaluations show that dogs are particularly often affected and edibles are among the most common triggers.
THC acts via the so-called endocannabinoid system. This system exists not only in humans but also in dogs, cats, and many other mammals. It influences movement, perception, mood, appetite, and various processes in the nervous system, among other things.
The effect is mainly due to THC binding to specific docking sites, known as CB1 receptors. In dogs, these receptors are particularly abundant in some areas of the brain, including regions that control movement, balance, and basic bodily functions.
Simply put, this means that a quantity of THC that might only cause a mild effect in a human can already be very distressing for a small dog. The crucial factor is not only the absolute amount but also the dose in relation to body weight.
A veterinary study examined 125 dogs with known or suspected cannabis poisoning. (Source: Evaluation of trends in marijuana toxicosis in dogs living in a state with legalized medical marijuana: 125 dogs (2005–2010). ) Within the evaluated period, the number of treated cases in the participating clinics quadrupled. Neurological symptoms such as staggering, severe fatigue, and delayed reactions were particularly noticeable.
Another difference: humans can usually classify an intoxication. An animal, however, does not understand why its own body suddenly feels different. It doesn't know why the ground seems to sway, noises seem unusual, or its legs no longer obey properly.
This can cause additional fear and disorientation. Therefore, cannabis and pets is not just a question of toxic effect. The stress caused by this unknown state can also be a significant burden for the animal.
In everyday life, THC poisoning sometimes seems harmless at first. A dog might only appear tired or "a bit off." However, this can mask a significant impairment of the nervous system.
Many people's first thought when it comes to cannabis and pets is passive smoking. In veterinary practices, however, another problem plays a larger role: animals eating cannabis products that are left lying around openly or are inadequately stored.
Edibles such as brownies, cookies, or gummy bears are particularly dangerous. They often smell appealing to dogs and are quickly eaten whole. At the same time, such products can contain a high concentration of THC.
Additionally, other toxins may be present. Chocolate, for instance, contains theobromine, which is dangerous for dogs. Xylitol, raisins, caffeine, or large amounts of fat can also cause additional symptoms. This often makes it difficult to determine later which component is responsible for which symptoms.
A North American online survey of 251 veterinarians found that edibles were most frequently cited as the suspected cause of cannabis poisoning in pets. A total of 116 respondents reported edible cannabis products as a possible trigger. The most common route of exposure was ingestion, with animals mostly eating the products unsupervised. After October 2018 – the time of cannabis legalization for adults in Canada – significantly more poisoning cases were reported in both Canada and the USA. However, researchers emphasize that a clear causal link cannot be derived from this: in addition to the greater availability of cannabis, increased awareness and more open disclosure by pet owners could also have contributed to the higher case numbers. The problem is twofold: the exact THC dose is often unknown, and symptoms do not always appear immediately. Especially with fatty foods, THC can be well absorbed. Therefore, an animal's condition may only significantly change some time after ingestion.
A dog finds a discarded brownie on the coffee table. At first, everything seems normal. Two hours later, it begins to stumble, becomes noticeably sleepy, and responds slowly when addressed.
The owner initially suspects exhaustion, circulatory problems, or an upset stomach. Only at the vet does it turn out to be a probable THC intoxication.
A less obvious risk is packaging. Dogs can ingest foils, paper, or containers along with residual traces. In addition to poisoning, there is also the risk of a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract.
Research on passive cannabis smoke in pets is significantly more limited than research on direct ingestion. Nevertheless, it cannot be concluded that the smoke is harmless.
Cannabis smoke does not only contain THC. Every combustion creates smoke particles, irritants, and gases. This applies to cannabis as well as tobacco or other burnt plant materials. Passive smoke is therefore generally not a healthy environment - neither for humans nor for animals.
A controlled study investigated how much THC non-smokers can absorb via passive cannabis smoke. For this, six non-smokers stayed in a small experimental chamber with six active users for one hour. Without ventilation, THC was subsequently detectable in the blood of all non-smokers. They also reported mild to moderate, predominantly calming effects; slight impairments were observed in a concentration and reaction test. If the room was ventilated with eleven air changes per hour, however, the measured THC levels were significantly lower, and neither relevant subjective effects nor measurable performance deficits occurred. However, these results apply to a deliberately created extreme situation and cannot be directly transferred to ordinary everyday exposure or to pets. Source: (Herrmann et al., 2015).
These results cannot be directly applied to dogs or cats. Animals have different body weights, different metabolisms, and may spend longer in contaminated rooms. They also cannot decide for themselves to leave the room or open a window.
That absorption via smoke is fundamentally possible is shown by a documented case of a cat. The animal was repeatedly exposed to strong cannabis smoke and alternately showed restlessness, aggressiveness, and apathy. THC and several THC breakdown products were detected in the blood. In this case, however, the smoke had been deliberately blown into the cat's face. It was therefore not an ordinary, brief everyday exposure.
This is an important distinction: a one-time smell in a well-ventilated room is not comparable to hours of smoke in an enclosed room. Nevertheless, no pet should regularly be exposed to cannabis smoke.
For cats, there's an additional factor: they regularly groom their fur with their tongues. Smoke particles can settle on textiles, furniture, surfaces, and also on their fur. While grooming, cats can ingest some of these residues.
This so-called third-hand smoke exposure is much better researched for tobacco smoke than for cannabis smoke. For cannabis, reliable data on how much THC is actually absorbed through residues in the fur is still lacking.
Therefore, the assertion that cats are permanently intoxicated by fur residues would be scientifically too broad. However, it is true that smoke does not completely disappear as soon as the joint is out. Residues can remain in the room and later come into contact with the animal again.
The frequently repeated statement that cats cannot metabolize THC at all is also false. Cats can metabolize THC. However, how quickly and in what way this happens is significantly less well researched than in humans. In the documented case of an intoxicated cat, several breakdown products were found in the blood in addition to THC.
For everyday life, therefore, a simple rule applies: Do not smoke in enclosed spaces while animals are present. Completely avoid direct smoke contact and then ventilate thoroughly.
Symptoms of THC poisoning can vary in severity. Some animals become very calm, others appear restless or jumpy. Often, several abnormalities occur simultaneously.

An evaluation by the Pet Poison Helpline for the period from January 2018 to February 2023 shows that severe drowsiness was the most frequently reported symptom of THC poisoning in pets at 30 percent. This was followed by coordination disorders or staggering at 21 percent and vomiting at 15 percent. Tremors, urinary incontinence, and increased sensitivity to noise or movement can also occur. Seizures and respiratory impairment have also been described but are considered rare. With appropriate supportive care, the prognosis is generally good, and symptoms usually subside within one to three days. Source: (Hommerding, 2026).
Owners should be particularly attentive with small animals, young animals, seniors, and pets with pre-existing conditions. For them, poisoning can lead to complications more quickly.
The type of product consumed is also important. A piece of a low-dose food is to be evaluated differently than concentrated THC oil, hashish, or a high-dose edible.
Symptoms can be delayed. Therefore, an animal should be observed even if it appears normal shortly after the presumed ingestion.
In cases of seizures, unconsciousness, breathing problems, severe hypothermia, persistent vomiting, or inability to stand, it is a veterinary emergency.
The most important protection is safe storage. Cannabis flowers, hashish, concentrates, oils, and edibles belong in sealed containers that animals cannot open or reach.
A high cabinet is often safer than a drawer or a bag on the floor. Dogs can chew open packaging, and cats can get to an astonishing number of seemingly inaccessible places.
Ashtrays, leftovers, filters, and used packaging should also not be left lying around. They may still contain active ingredients or other harmful residues.
If there is a suspicion that an animal has eaten cannabis or inhaled a larger amount of smoke, a veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic should be contacted immediately.
Honesty is paramount here. Veterinarians can help faster and more targeted if they know which product may have been ingested. If possible, packaging, ingredients, THC content, approximate quantity, and time of ingestion should be provided.
The animal should not be made to vomit on its own. Milk, oil, salt, or other home remedies are also unsuitable and can worsen the situation. The necessary treatment depends on the animal's condition and the time of ingestion.
For smoke: Immediately remove the animal from the affected room, ventilate thoroughly, and avoid further contact. Cannabis and pets can coexist in a household – but not by making pets regularly inhale smoke.
Cannabinoid products for animals should also not be used without consultation. While CBD does not intoxicate like THC, it can cause gastrointestinal problems. Additionally, some products contain unintended or mislabeled THC amounts.
In the long term, cannabis and pets primarily become a problem when products are left lying around, symptoms are downplayed, or animals are deliberately exposed to smoke. Responsible handling can significantly reduce most risks.
Cannabis in the household is a real source of danger for pets. The greatest acute risk is not from a brief smell, but from the accidental ingestion of flowers, hashish, concentrates, or THC-containing foods.
Dogs are particularly often affected. After THC ingestion, they may stagger, become very tired, tremble, or lose control of their bladder. Cats can also develop THC poisoning. However, the claim that they cannot metabolize THC at all is incorrect.
Passive smoking is less well researched than direct ingestion. However, it is not harmless. Under heavy exposure in enclosed spaces, THC can be absorbed through the respiratory tract. Additionally, cannabis smoke contains combustion products and particles that no animal should be regularly exposed to.
Residues on surfaces and fur are also a reason for caution. Whether cats absorb relevant amounts of THC through this has not yet been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, neither a clear all-clear nor the claim that cats remain permanently high due to fur residues is scientifically sound.
Crucial are safe storage, smoke-free rooms for animals, and quick action in case of unusual behavior. Most intoxications have a mild course with timely care. Nevertheless, suspicion should always be taken seriously and clarified by a veterinarian.
Deaths from THC alone are very rare in dogs. However, severe intoxications can still be life-threatening, for example due to respiratory or circulatory problems, severe hypothermia, or secondary complications. In the case of edibles, additional ingredients like chocolate or xylitol can increase the risk. Prompt veterinary treatment significantly improves the prognosis.
